The Master List of Shows through November!!!!!

So I've been promising to make a comprehensive list of all the foreign bands coming to the tri-state area.  One of the greatest things about living in Columbia is that we are, relatively speaking, centrally located to all the best venues.  To Charleston and Charlotte it's an hour and a half drive, to Asheville or Chapel Hill, two and half hours, and the longest drive would be to Athens or Atlanta at three hours.  All of which are manageable in comparison to when I was growing up in Charleston.  Some years Charleston would be just as important to a band's tour as Asheville or ATL, but more often than not bands would skip SC altogether and I'd be left eying shows in Atlanta or Asheville knowing the four or five hour drive was just too much (particularly if you don't have a car or when you did your parents had a heart attack just thinking about their seventeen year old daughter in Atlanta traffic).  Basically us Cola folks have a really great location for seeing everyone when they come to the major cities of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

With all that out of the way, oh my word so many foreign bands are coming to the area.  Like above and beyond what lineups have looked like in the past few years.  Which is why I was so excited to share this with y'all.  And surprise! We have two foreigners coming to Columbia!!! This may not even be the complete list but this is what I have so far.  Feel free to comment if there's anything I missed.

For those of you who loved Coco O's track Where the Wind Blows on the Great Gatsby soundtrack you will be as thrilled as I am to know that Quadron (her band) has released a new album and holy crap is it lovely. It's got soul and funk and lovely things coming out of Denmark of all places!!! This music video is also just lovely but that may be because it reminds me of So You Think You Can Dance (in like the best way possible!) If you can't tell by the exclamation points in this post I'm a little in love.

So I realize after typing this show up that I was very Anglo-centric with this week's selection. That being said there were some amazing new releases this week from Scotland's Camera Obscura and Australian McDreamy Matt Corby. Stellar tracks and all around lovely things from these two. Looking beyond the former British Empire there are a few stand outs including Iodine by When Saints Go Machine and Grass Leaves by the Icelandic band Parachutes. Oh and if you thought Mikhael Paskalev was a one hit wonder with I Spy check out his other single Jive Babe. Flirty fun summer love with old favorites sprinkled with new foreign tunes on this set.

Sexy Summer Sounds

I've been meaning to get into Latin American music for a long time now. My shows and library of foreign music tends to be very Eurocentric. So this Summer I'm making a point of researching and finding great bands from South and Central America. One thing to note is that Mexico is killing it in their music scene right now. One band in particular to take note of is Francisco y Madero. This duo is only kind of foreign. In 2010 Franciscan native Jess Sylvester contacted Guadalajarian musician Carlos Pesina through myspace. Between dropbox and a few visits back and forth they have created one of the most stunning, and sadly short (only 5 songs), albums for the summer season. Using live cuts as well as samples from all over the place the pair have created a unique blend of traditional Latin sounds of brass horns, beats and funky bass lines with gurgling synthesized vibratos. The stand out track is Mamacita with French esque 60s phsycadelic undertones and sexy breathless vocals playing on a loop in the background. Hypnotize is also stunning in it’s use of doo op, and the manipulation and warping of different samples. The album is perfect for hot summer nights with sexy vibes and layers of lush sounds infusing modern mixing with Latin beats, while at the same time giving a nod to vintage psychedelic sounds and surfer rock of the 60s and 70s.
